Let’s Blog About Art

We were thinking this would be a good place for artists to post and get feedback on their art!

Let’s see how it goes.

For starters, what do people think of our new show by Berta Daniels?

ok ok…I am Listening and Random Thoughts For the Day….

Many of you have been asking when our next group show will be, so many in fact that I am going to move up the date of my show to November and make room for group shows in December, January and February. The exact dates have not been decided, but start thinking “Water” for December. “No Pretty Pictures” (Art and Politics) For January. February will be our Breast Cancer Fundraiser “A Show of Hearts”.

I went to the Boston gift show yesterday, always looking for cool things for when you all need a gift, and gift giving season is right around the corner. I will keep you posted in our weekly email as things come in. Of course custom framed items always make the best gift, please think ahead because we get swamped had have to work way to hard to keep up, but of course we will get it done to keep you all happy.

We are working hard on a big corporate job right now. It is for an accounting firm. One of the fun parts about doing corporate work is picking out pieces that reflect what a company does. For example in this case we wanted to reflect strength, growth, teamwork. It’s going to come out fabulous! What kind of artwork would reflect what you do? Need some help?

Thank you for reading,

Artists and Picture Framing

Very often I will get a phone call or an artist will come in feeling uncomfortable asking if we could just cut a mat or help them with part of a framing project, put this piece into this old frame etc….. I am always surprised by the discomfort because that is what we do here! Yes of course we do fabulous custom framing from start to finish, but we love all parts of framing. We are happy to help artists get their pieces ready for presentation, if it’s just a mat or the whole deal. I can also get special pricing together if you need a bunch of stuff framed for a show. I have increased the amount of readymade products as well. So let me know if there is more I can do, and please don’t worry about asking for the little things, yes we can just put that canvas into a frame for you, no problem!

Painting

Last night I was experimenting with some more golden mediums. There is a “course” and a “fine” garnet medium, that I wondered what on earth would I use that for. So I came up with a painting idea and I started experimenting…. at first I wasn’t so sure I liked it… but then as I got more creative it got very interesting. I thought the strong garnet color would show through, I thought I would be painting it on separately, but after reading the label I mixed it right in with my paints…. The result???? No Garnet color show… but I got a very textured interesting painting. I also tried mixing in the extra heavy gloss medium, that was amazing as well, the thick creamy texture made spreading the paint really fun and smooth and thick!!!  Oh! I almost forgot, I put the golden retarding medium in everything, it was almost like oil painting again! The paint stayed wet the whole time I was working, I blended right on the board… I was painting on gessoed masonite… The painting is not done yet or I would post it here, maybe I will when it is done, however, it will be in my show in December…. so maybe I should keep it a surprise? Does anybody have some favorites they like to use?

Golden Acrylics!

As you may have heard we now have a huge selection of Golden acrylics. I was just checking out their web site, and they too have a blog, and in that blog was an entry about paints labeled “hue”. I learned something new! I recommend you check out their site, and if you haven’t tried their paints come in and see what we have! So far I have loved the fluid acrylics, and their retarding medium (which we do not have in stock yet but we will soon) is totally amazing and has changed the way I paint!

NAMTA

I have finally been back in my studio!!!!! It is cleaned up and ready for a new round of art!!!! My two new pieces are posted on the web site. I was trying out some sample paint I got when I went to the Boston Namta show,(National Art Material Trade Association). There were so many cool products, I couldn’t wait to get back here and play with them! I have some Graham acrylic samples that have brilliant color and are made with high quality pigments that are just beautiful, but I found them to be a bit soft for my taste. I also tried the new Steven Quiller paints. Those had a nice texture and some of the colors had a bit of a natural shine to them. I am still deciding if I like that or not. I have been getting some feedback from many of you that I need to try the Golden acrylics. If any of you have an opinion on a new brand to carry I would love to hear it!

The other exciting products I tried were some new items from Caran D’ache. They have upgraded their line of water soluble crayons with a higher concentration of pigment for more intense color and better lightfastness. They are also thicker. There are some cool new watercolor pencil sticks, artist quality oil pastels, and regular pastels. All in stock, and we have samples for you to play with if you would like to check it all out!!!

Art is so much fun!!!

These two small paintings were done with a combination of the two new paints I was checking out. You can really see the natural shine off the Steve Quiller purple. The intensity of color off the Graham.

Zulugrass

We are so excited about carrying Zulugrass jewelry!

 zulugrass1

First, the purchase of Zulugrass provides economic opportunity for the Maasai women and their families.

Second, it is handcrafted using natural grass beads dyed in rich hues combined with sparkling Czech glass beads.

zulugrass3

Third, the strands can be worn in single or multiple strands as a necklace, hair tie, bracelet, anklet and can be combined in an infinite number of colorways to create a unique look every time you wear them!

And of course, Zulugrass makes a great gift!
