DATE/TIME: Tuesday, April 9th - 1:30 - 3:30

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Come join Michele for an online watercolor workshop.  You’ll be able
to view Michele’s paper as she demonstrates watercolor techniques followed by a
full painting.  You’ll be able to paint alongside her, ask questions and interact with other students.

SUPPLY LIST:

Watercolor paper

  • A 9x12 pad or block (although I’ll be using 11”x15” paper so people

can see what’s going on).

Arches cold press 140lb is a lovely paper when people are learning.

It dries slowly allowing people to take their time over their paintings. Other good papers are Fabriano Artistico,  Winsor and Newton professional and Fluid 100. Cheaper paper (e.g. Strathmore,  Canson XL) can be hard to work with for full paintings but can be used in a pinch.  This is also very useful for exercise and technique work.

Paints:

  • Ultramarine blue
  • Phthalo blue
  • Naphthol red or Windsor red
  • Quinacridone Rose
  • Yellow ochre
  • Lemon yellow
  • Burnt Sienna

Optional Paints

  • Burnt umber
  • Cadmium orange
  • Cerulean blue

Artist’s quality paints are best (e.g. M Graham, Winsor and Newton,
Holbein,  Daniel smith) but student colors can work well.  I recommend
tube paints but pans are fine - they just need a little more effort to
get the right pigment load on the brush. If you do have non-artists quality paints consider

buying a tube of ultramarine and a tube of burnt sienna from an artist's quality line.
I’ve noticed that the cheaper brands make it difficult to get the
darkest darks. If you’re using pans then they usually come in a box with mixing
space.    For tube paints a cheap white plastic palette with a folding
lid is ideal.   The lid should keep the paints moist between sessions.

Brushes:

  • A size 10 or 12 round can be used for 90% of your painting.

Sables are nice but a good synthetic is almost as good at a fraction of the
price.   My favorites are Escoda Versatil and Princeton Aqua Elite.

Misc Tools:

  • A mechanical pencil
  • A kneadable eraser
  • Paper towels
  • Water container
